“True Tales” Cast and Crew Premiere Brings Burlesque to Texas Theatre
Last night, close to 450 cast, crew, friends and family packed the historic Texas Theatre for the private screening of AMS Pictures’ latest project, True Tales. The film centers around Nancy Myers, aka “Tammi True,” a headlining act at Jack Ruby’s Carousel Club in the early 1960s. With her smokey voice and tongue-in-cheek humor, Nancy narrates the film, giving the audience a glimpse into her life and the events surrounding the JFK assassination and murder of Lee Harvey Oswald.
The Ruby Revue, a Texas-based burlesque show, kicked off the night with song and dance. Many of the performers on stage also appeared in the film, which featured recreations from the Carousel Club, as well as footage from the Ruby Revue 2011 first anniversary show, in which Nancy herself performed. And as Nancy put it, she can still “bump and grind.”
After the burlesque show, the movie began. Its mix of interviews, archival footage and recreations offer a unique look into Nancy’s life, 1960s Dallas and the fateful events of November 22, 1963.
To wrap up the evening, Nancy took the stage for a Q&A with True Tales Producer, Katie Dunn, and Executive Producer, Andy Streitfeld, which was then opened up to questions from the audience. Answering everything from her feelings about the film and the journey of its making to how she kept her girly figure, Nancy’s humor shined throughout. She also talked about life after “hanging up the G-string,” getting remarried, buying land in Collin County to raise horses and working in banking. “I wasn’t really totally stupid,” she informed the crowd.
